The Anti-Bride

I have been having lots of fun taking some artistic license with the wonderful wedding images of some dear friends of mine--with their permission, of course. I love the image of this happy bride combined with this fun quote from Bette Davis: "Brought up to respect the conventions, I'm afraid love had to end in marriage. I'm afraid it did." And I amused myself by putting hearts on a collage, which is something I rarely do because usually I think hearts are pretty cheesy, but I think it works on this project. This piece is getting ready to face the public; more info on that coming soon!

Words of Wisdom for the young and old

This creation is for a friend's newborn daughter. I'm sure she has plenty of blankets, outfits, and toys, so I thought I would send her one of my very favorite quotes that I try to live by. I think these words are good ones to keep in mind: "Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else."

It's the little things in life

It's the little things in life that really brighten your day sometimes. Yesterday was a bleak, dreary January day and I felt the need to cheer myself up. So I went to one of my favorite places, ephemera, for a dose of cheer and also to spend my gift certificate. Obviously fate led me there at just the right time, because I discovered a whole bunch of vintage dress patterns, which I've been on the lookout for these days. And of course seeing the ladies of ephemera, Arin and Karen, always brightens my day as well. So I left with patterns and a big smile.

What the Hell Saturday Shop Update

Another quote from Marilyn: "Ever notice how 'what the hell' is always the right answer? Irreverent yet insightful!
Just updated the shop with a couple more quote canvases this morning. Now for a fun-filled weekend of Thomas the Tank Engine, laundry, and squeezing in some creative projects in between. Maybe I will actually finish my December Daily book! Also looking forward to "Desperate Housewives" tomorrow night; I think Larry Hagman is guest starring--good to know he's still alive and kicking! Those who know me know I'm a die-hard "Dallas" fan--the type who has pre-ordered Season 14 on DVD. Hey, it's January in Iowa. We have to keep ourselves busy inside the house because it's waaaay to cold to go out!
Have a great weekend!

Wise Girl

Thoughts about what a wise girl does from Marilyn Monroe: "A wise girl kisses but doesn't love, listens but doesn't believe, and leaves before she is left." A bit cynical and jaded perhaps, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one who wishes she'd taken Marilyn's advice at one time or another.
All the collages pictured these last few days are now available in my etsy shop if you would like to have one for yourself. Just click on the link to your right!

Imagine a Queen

The photo in this collage is one of a few that I have of my grandmother when she was young, at age 16 in 1929. Love the flapper 'do. I remember her telling me how that hairdo was achieved, something about hot irons to create each wave and it took quite a long time (her hair was naturally very straight). I've always wished I could have known my grandparents when they were young people. Maybe someday I'll have a grandchild who will wonder what I was like when I was young? Hmmmm....anyway, my grandma had lots of queen-like qualities, so here I imagine her a queen. The bits of paper doily used on the collage belonged to her and I try to use them wisely.

A little vintage wisdom

Love this quote from the great Katharine Hepburn. And you can just bet she lived by these words. I try to live by them too.

Lovin these ladies...

Been having lots of fun lately with paint and vintage sewing patterns, creating some fun little collages combining vintage fashion images with words of wisdom from the likes of Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe. I just added two of my favorites to my etsy shop. The quote featured on this piece is from the legendary Bette Davis. And I couldn't resist the aqua pantsuit. I mean, who could?
